The municipality Ruhpolding with 6400 inhabitants is located in the district Traunstein in the eastern Bavarian Chiemgauer Alps. Located at only 8 km from motorway exit �Siegsdorf�, Ruhpolding can be easily accessed via motorway A8 Munich � Salzburg.
The valley lies at an altitude of 655 m surrounded by mountains, the highest of which is the Sonntagshorn (1.961 m) in the south.
In combination with the moderately high location, the geographic characteristics make for a pleasant climate with hardly any sultry heat.
Since the 1960's, Ruhpolding is officially recognized as a climatic health resort. The town became well known for its skiing possibilities, particularly through the Biathlon World cup which is staged here.
For this reason, Ruhpolding is one of the cornerstones of the famous skiing triangle Inzell � Ruhpolding � Reit im Winkl. A series of tow lifts, ski slopes and cross country trails are found in the immediate proximity.
The high altitude skiing areas in the region, such as Rauschberg, Unternberg, Hochfelln and Winklmoos-Steinplatte are known to be especially snow certain.
